IMC and Night Ratings |
|
Pilot Flight Training teaches both the IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) qualification, and the Night rating. The IMC allows pilots to fly in marginal weather conditions, and the Night rating allows pilots to fly after sunset and before sunrise.

IMC Rating
The IMC course teaches the pilot to fly in marginal weather conditions including cloud, radio navigation and instrument approaches. The IMC is a national rating - the CAA will only add an IMC rating to a UK issued licence.
Minimum requirements for the IMC course are at least 25 hours experience following PPL issue (10 of which are as Pilot In Command and 5 hours of cross-country flying). The IMC course is a 25 hour course - 15 hours of dual instruction and 10 hours of flying solely on instruments. 2 hours of the dual instruction can be on our IMC simulator. If you book the entire IMC course in advance, use of our simulator is free.
Night Qualification
The basic PPL (A) licence allows the pilot to fly in daylight only - for those who want to fly in the still night skies, we teach the Night qualification which allows the holder to fly before sunrise and after sunset. The Night qualification is a JAR qualification and is recognised by all member states. Night training can be completed during PPL training.
The requirements for the Night qualification are 5 hours of overall night flying, of which at least 3 are under dual instruction, and at least 1 hour of dual night navigation. This training must include 5 take offs and full stop landings at night.
